if it's the 16v with 150bhp it'll get going faster to 60, I'd bet my wig on it. but beyond that the merc definitely will be gone

How do you know it's the 16v engine, if you don't mind me asking?
EDIT: I mean, does it physically say 16v on the engine?

Yea on the side of the car it says 16 V and on the engine

Odd, I thought the 16v versions had "16V" in the front grille in stead of "GTI" and the same on the back. Certainly held true for the one my parents had. So, it's had an engine swap then?

No no engine Change i know its a VW Golf GTI 16V 2.0L
