New processor
Ok right so,
atm I have an intel dual core E2200 2.2GHz processor, but I am looking for a possible quad core processor.
I know the pins on the processor i already have are 775, but im not sure wheather a quad core processor would be compatible with my mobo,
trouble is i'm not too good with processors and mobos,
I was wondering if anyone could help me find out if a quad core would be compatible with my computer
The pc is an Acer Veriton M464,
- updated graphics card to nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX
- updated psu to 665 watts
thanks in advance

Re: New processor
Up to 200 british pounds.
I have found a possible processor though, http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?IL-Q9550
It's a Q9550, £174.15, quad core, 2.83GHz
sound good?

Re: New processor
Can your motherboard definately support quad cores?
This is also a very nice and slightly cheaper alternative
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?IL-E8400
That CPU can run almost any game out at the moment at it's highest detail, although getting a fast quad core may be tempting, a computer can only run as fast as it's slowest component. A 9800GTX, although still a fairly respectable card, is far outmatched by the 2.8Ghz quad. Unless you plan on upgrading other compnents in the near future I'd advise to lower the bar on your CPU just slightly and save the extra money.

Re: New processor
Well, i'm not intirely sure it will,
but this is the response i got when i posted this same post on the lfs forum,
I have a spare £400 quid stashed in the bank for pc funds, and i was also planning on getting two sticks of 2gb ram to upgrade my ram from 2gb to 4gb http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CSR-644G5C
(it's my birthday you see, getting the processor from my mum:P)
I sent her the link to that other processor already so i better consult again with her
P.S. would the ram make a considerable difference into getting the quad or no?
P.P.S what would you say the minimal components would be to get the full potential out of the quad??
(sorry im a newb im only 14)
many thanks for your responses
but this is the response i got when i posted this same post on the lfs forum,
Would an upgrade from a 2.2ghz dual core to a 3.0ghz dual core processor be a very noticable upgrade? Most lga 775 motherboards will support a dual and quad core, and if not they should only require a bios update (google it, if you don't know what that is). If you want your money's worth, I'd recommend a q9550 at $220 USD. Pretty good bang for the buck. If that's too much, an e8400 dual core should be great at $160 USD

Re: New processor
Yes, this would make a huge different becuase you are getting much newer technology and the E8400 has 5MB cache if I remember with 45nm arcitechture (This is good) I would say expect at least double perforance increase CPU wise.theaidanator wrote:Would an upgrade from a 2.2ghz dual core to a 3.0ghz dual core processor be a very noticable upgrade?
Memory wise, upgrading would be a very wise choice but remember that on a 32Bit operating system you will only be able to have 3.5Gb of that recognised.

Re: New processor
Ok,
Thanks for the advice, i have decided to go with what you say and get the cheaper dual core 3.0ghz one
Also, since this will leave me with a big of money left over, i've also decided to get a new case,
cause the one i have already is so small its depressing
Antec 900 perhaps ??
I'm also concidering moving back to xp,
for the better performance.

Re: New processor
If you have a E8400 that's a pointless choice, vista has DX10, your video card is DX10, also, on a processor as new as that your performance increase will be barely noitcedable, vista is the way forward now in my eyes.
I am saying no more on the Vista vs XP issue, I don't really want to see this thread turn into a OS war.

i got really excited
had a bit of pain trying to get it all into the new case, but it worked nicely and i thought everything was plugged in properly
Got the box plugged into a socket and clicked the on switch!!!.....

Re: New processor
Just thought, have you put the ram in the right slot (are there 2/4? different coloured?) it had the same charicteristics when we put the ram in the wrong ones.
